 Sarah Wright

Ecologist

Sarah recently joined the team as our second plant ecologist who has an incredibly broad and deep knowledge of plants in Aotearoa.  There are many reasons why Sarah is working with us – including her love of native plants and wanting to protect them and their habitat.

Sarah has a Master’s degree in plant biology from Canterbury (2015), a Bachelor’s degree in botany from Otago (2012), and certificates in horticulture and arboriculture from Otago Polytechnic.

She is well-experienced in isolated backcountry and other rugged work, having worked in weed control and predator control, and until recently, in vegetation monitoring for the Department of Conservation for six years. This took her from lowland forest to mountaintops, and from wetlands to drylands, in the North (Te Ika-a-Māui), South (Te Waipounamu) and Stewart Islands (Rakiura).

Having also done her fair share of restoration tree planting, she is enjoying getting back into the science of habitat restoration, and loves the challenge of identifying difficult plant groups (like tiny native grasses), especially when a microscope is required!
